While we normally talk about helping you prevent spam reaching you, today we've decided to have a look at problems on the other side; how people sending legimate emails can get caught out by our ever advancing spam detection tools.
Spam emails tend to take one of a few forms; some sort of pornography, some sort of pills or drugs, free college degrees, or medical proceedures. What do you do if you are sending legimate, solicited, or even just informative emails about these topics?
Say you worked in the Los Angeles Plastic Surgery industry and wanted to send out emails to previous clients offering new pricelists for treatments, the like? The majority of spam filters would knock it straight off and send it to the bin. So what can you do to avoid this? If you are a solicited sender of mail, you will likely have other details about the person you are sending the information to, so use a mail merge to include names of recievers, most spam detectors will see this and give it the green light for entry to the inbox. Other techniques include using a mixture of HTML and plaintext to give a professional look to the email, rather than blocks of plaintext or large images, things filters tend to pick up upon.
