Storm Worm Returns

Filed in archive Spam News by Sue Walsh on June 20, 2008

The Storm Worm is back folks. That's right. The monster botnet security experts and researchers thought was dead has roared back to life. In the last 24 hours it has sent out over 8 million spam messages. Anyone who falls for one of them will have their PC added to Storm's network of zombie computers. The newest spam messages sport subject lines like "Obama Quits Presidential Race", "Statue of Liberty Catches Fire", and "Britney Spears Found Dead". All of them contain a bogus link to PornTube, the adult version of YouTube. The fake site is hosted on group of hacked servers and when someone clicks on the link, they get a pop up saying an active xlinks control must be installed in order to view the videos. What actually downloads is a malicious trojan that adds the infected computer to Storm. It just goes to show that you should never underestimate the cyber underworld!
