Verizon Customers Hit With Wave of Text Message Spam

Verizon Wireless customers were hit with a wave of text message spam this week. The messages asked receivers if they were looking for a date and included a link to an adult website.

You have kids with cell phones," said Dan Shaffer of Wireless Solutions. "Some of this material, objectionable, and should not be able to get through."

Unlike traditional email spam, text message spam is especially problematic because the recipients can be charged a fee for each message received on their mobile phone by their wireless provider. Verizon, who claims it blocks millions of text message spams a month, says they are investigating, and will credit customers accounts for any spam messages received. Verizon customers can block text spam by going here.

Will it be just a matter of time before anti spyware & antivirus software is installed on mobile devices?

  1. I got this very text message spam this afternoon while I was trying to nap. I need a nap a lot more than I need a “date”. The link above doesn’t lead to anything useful, just a page to sign up for text messaging service – pretty much the last thing I need. At least I figured out how to turn off the phone’s ringer for text messages. Other than this spam, the only test message I have ever received is from Verizon. However, I provided my cell phone number to eBay last week for alerts. Could eBay be the leak?
